This Month, It’s All About Women
This March, the world is celebrating and encouraging women. Here are some of the events and celebrations that take place this month for women:
Women’s History Month
March is Women’s History Month – a time to celebrate the important women in our history and the pioneers that paved the way for women today. Women like Amelia Earhart, Sally Ride, Rosa Parks, Margaret Thatcher or Benazir Buttho have all helped to shape the future for women. For an entire month, we recognize them and celebrate them.
International Women’s Day
March 8, 2014 was International Women’s Day, a day that has been celebrated globally since 1911. It’s an official holiday in many countries and includes thousands of events throughout the world. This year, to honor the day Google changed its “Google Doodle” to represent the female icon, as well as a video of over 100 inspirational women.
Women of Aviation Worldwide Week
Women of Aviation Worldwide Week was celebrated March 3rd-9th, 2014 with events located throughout North America. The week’s events focus on women’s roles in aviation as well as introducing young women to careers in aviation. Volunteers involved in WOAW week offer free flights, tours of airports and get-togethers for women in the aviation industry. Guest speakers, prizes, challenges and contests are all part of the week, and the event allows people to celebrate on their own and send in a report. The flight or event report is then depicted on the organizer’s web page to show the extent of involvement of women in aviation throughout the country.
Women in Aviation, International Conference
The International Women in Aviation Conference celebrated its 25th year this year from March 6-8, with a conference that broke attendance records. Over 4,500 people showed up to attend the job fair, network, compete for scholarships and peruse the exhibit hall, which was filled with over 100 exhibitors. The conference is a favorite for men as well as women, but the events focus on getting women involved in aviation and supporting women in all aviation career fields.
Women in Aviation, International recently announced the formation of a new chapter in the Middle East, called WAI-ME, that offers support and encouragement to women seeking a career in aviation throughout the Middle East.
If you’re a woman in aviation, hopefully you’ve taken advantage of one or more of these events. If you’re a man in the aviation industry, take a moment this month to inspire or encourage a young woman to follow her dreams.
Because we all know that there are just not enough women in this industry today. We need more.
